Kadant, a provider of critical components and engineered systems for process industries, has closed the acquisition of US-based Balemaster for $54m in cash.

Balemaster is engaged in the manufacturing of horizontal balers and related equipment suitable for recycling packaging waste at corrugated box plants, as well as large retail and distribution centres.

Kadant president and CEO Jeffrey Powell said: “Our acquisition of Balemaster expands our presence in the secondary material processing sector and creates new opportunities for leveraging our high-performance balers produced in Europe.

“The company is a market leader in North America and its strong aftermarket business fits well with Kadant. We are excited to welcome the employees of Balemaster to the Kadant family.”

Balemaster provides balers, which consists of baling accessories and solutions to meet the corrugated and cardboard waste handling requirements.

The company’s baler features a heavy-duty automatic wire-tier, which completes the tie-off cycle within 30 seconds.

With more than 50 information screens, the baler features the most comprehensive touch screen controller.

Its bale density control system will help automatically and continuously regulate the tensioning force when a paper grade change is made.

The system creates greater squeezing force to achieve the highest bale density for wax-coated or laminated boards.

Balemaster has reported revenue of up to $22m for the trailing 12 months ended 30 June this year.

Balemaster president Cornel Raab said: “Kadant is a world-class company with a similar culture and values as our family-built business, and we believe it is a great home for our company and employees.”

Kadant said that the acquired business will become part of the company’s material handling reporting segment.

Kadant supplies high-value, critical components and engineered systems used in process industries around the world.

The firm’s products, technologies, and services will help improve process efficiency, optimise energy utilisation and maximise productivity in resource-intensive industries.
