Huhtamaki, a Finland-based consumer packaging company, has announced its plans to unveil three new sustainable solutions in mono-material flexible packaging.

Designed for recycling, the new solutions are expected to use fewer materials than traditional complex and multi-layered materials.

According to Huhtamaki, the packaging will have the highest percentage of mono-material in the market. It is delivered without compromising product protection or affordability.

The enhanced percentage of mono-material in each of the solutions increases both the technical and economic viability of recycling.

The mono-material flexible packaging is available in three alternative material solutions like PAPER, PE (polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene) Retort, suitable for demanding use.

Huhtamaki said that PAPER and PP have 90% of the mono-material share whereas PE has 95% of the mono-material share without compromising protection barriers, recyclability and affordability.

The packaging firm has minimised the amount of material used for increased resource efficiency. It also has invested in new production technologies across its production footprint to create a global supply capacity for new product innovations.

Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging president Marco Hilty said: “These at-scale innovations will support our customers reach the commitments many of them have made, including to use only recyclable, compostable or reusable packaging by 2025 and align with the direction of future policy, both in the EU and globally.

“Our innovations ensure flexible packaging affordability – especially important to consumers across the world, and they provide the high level of product protection, for food and household essentials, that flexible packaging is known for.

“This breakthrough will therefore increase the value of post-consumer material, providing a greater economic incentive for recycling and supporting circularity.”

Huhtamaki will exhibit its products at Interpack 2023, which will take place from 4 to 10 May 2023 at the Dusseldorf Trade Fair Centre in Germany.

In 2020, the packaging company pledged to make its packaging 100% recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030. Huhtamaki has already made 70% of its packaging recyclable.

The company operates in 37 nations and has 116 operating locations around the world.
