Food packaging firm Aptar Food + Beverage has launched a new dispensing closure Slide that does not require a foil liner for shelf-stable food products.

According to the firm, the latest offering increases consumer convenience, reduces waste, and improves packaging recyclability.

Aptar Food + Beverage designed a unique non-detachable tamper evidence system that is integrated into the closure to do away with the requirement for a foil liner.

The tamper evidence band glides from the “closed” to the “open” position when the package is initially opened, locking into the lid of the closure, the packaging firm said.

Aptar said that this feature benefits both companies and consumers by ensuring product safety as it informs consumers whether the box has already been opened.

Additionally, Slide offers more convenient packaging because customers do not have to take the cap off the bottle, take off and throw away the liner, and then screw the cap back on before using the product.

The firm claimed that the Slide eliminates all of these stages in favour of a single, natural opening move.

Aptar senior global business development manager Matt Schalewski said: “We conducted multiple consumer studies while developing this solution, and in almost every case, we heard that removing the liner is a point of frustration today.

“Slide enables consumers to access their product with one opening gesture, delivering a convenient and memorable packaging experience while still protecting product shelf life and reducing the potential for product tampering.”

The company mentioned that the brand owners are looking for packaging solutions that are compatible with and help them fulfil their environmental goals, in addition to maintaining the convenience and safety of consumers.

Removing the foil liner lowers the quantity of packaging waste because it is currently not thought to be recyclable, the packaging firm added.

According to Aptar’s lifecycle research, packaging without a foil liner (Slide) decreases greenhouse gas emissions by 16% when compared to closures with foil liners.

The Association for Plastic Recyclers (APR) in the US and RecyClass in Europe have recognised Aptar’s SimpliCycle flow control valve technology as being entirely recyclable and used in the dispensing closure.
