Plastic packaging manufacturer Alpla has developed a new tethered cap for Austrian mineral water company Vöslauer.

Four versions of the tethered cap were designed by Alpla to comply with the EU requirement from 2024 that all drinks caps remain tethered to the bottle after opening. The versions include Dance, Relax, Soul and Jazz.

As per the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive, all the caps and lids on beverage packaging of up to three litres will have to be firmly attached to the bottle even after opening from July 2024.

Vöslauer has selected Alpla’s Dance tethered cap for some of its one-litre bottles in Austria and Germany.

The Bleibt dran tethered cap of Vöslauer will help pull to one side with a slight twisting motion, thereby helping to keep it out of the way when pouring or when drinking directly from the bottle.

The caps, which are attached to bottles made of 100% recyclate, are designed for easy disposal in the recycling bin bag or bin through bottle return machines in Germany.

Vöslauer managing director Birgit Aichinger said: “The cap is tethered to the bottle by a band, so it can’t get lost. With this solution, we are performing pioneering work as a provider in this area of sustainability too.”

Alpla’s sustainable and functional tethered cap solutions are suitable for use on various packaging sizes.

The dance cap is said to remain tethered to the cap ring on the bottleneck with a single band after it is opened.

Alpla also offers Relax cap, which can be fixed in three different positions on the bottleneck after opening. It uses two bands for tethering to the packaging.

The Soul design allows cap to be bent back to an angle of up to 160 degrees when opened and attached to the thread with a small pin.

In addition, the Jazz flip-top folding cap remains attached to the bottleneck after opening. It helps to provide a wide and convenient aperture angle for pouring or for drinking from the bottle.

Alpla Steinabrückl plant manager Werner Rosenberger said: “We are a team that works on and then realises projects together again and again. We have been doing this for some time now, so we work excellently together.”
