A roll-on deodorant stick believed to be Europe’s first to be designed to stand “upside down” exploits the “excellent sealing properties” of German company Kraiburg TPE’s Thermoplast K thermoplastic elastomer compounds.
With the personal care market “ mature and fiercely competitive”, Sara Lee wanted to update its “dusch das” roll-on deodorant range via both new packaging and enhanced functionality. Thanks to a design which sees the container stood on its head with the overcap at the base, and a leak-proof non-visible seal between roller and the liquid deodorant, the roller ball stays wet and is instantly ready for use.
The innovative design, however, meant fluid leakage was a potential problem.
Sara Lee, which worked with the Weener Plastic Packaging Group to develop the bottle, selected Thermoplast K for the non-visible seal. Weener exploited the TPE material’s “easy processability” and multi-material compatibility during two-shot injection moulding to adhere the compound to the base PP.
