Toppan Printing has expanded its GL Barrier range with the launch of new paper-based barrier material for packaging for the food and toiletries industries.

Developed in collaboration with Nippon Paper Industries, the new product, which is made of paper material and has barrier properties, will be the first paper-based product in the GL Barrier series.

Toppan plans to begin sample shipments of the new material for the food and toiletries industries in Japan and overseas in spring 2018.

The new product combines Nippon Paper’s Shieldplus, a new material designed to offer enhanced barrier performance, as well as Toppan Printing’s sealant processing and other advanced converting technologies.

The company said that the combination of the barrier functions with Toppan’s technologies resulted in a product that meets all kinds of packaging requirements including maintenance of content freshness.

Toppan said: “The material is optimized for digital printing processes and offers outstanding printability and processability, enabling the production of high-quality digital packages, fully exploiting the advantages of digital printing, such as short lead times and small lot production.”

Toppan is considering further development of the new product and intends to begin mass production in 2019, with sales target of approximately 10 billion in 2025 for packaging and related orders.
