Tetra Pak in collaboration with recyclers and industry stakeholders has co-invested more than €11.5m to set up four new carton recycling solutions in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Australia, and Ukraine.

The new solutions can recycle all components of a used carton package and convert them into quality materials and goods.

When operational, the new recycling solutions can process up to an additional 45,000 tonnes of used carton packages, bringing worldwide carton package recycling to more than 50 billion per annum.

Tetra Pak market operations EVP Tatiana Liceti said: “Carton packages are recycled across the globe, where efficient waste management and recycling infrastructures are in place.

“Accelerating this requires all stakeholders to play an active role, including governments, local authorities, producers and consumers.

“Sustainability is one of the top three priorities for our customers, and these new facilities will help contribute towards meeting their goals.”

In Saudi Arabia, the company teamed up with two recycling firms Obeikan Paper Industries (OPI) and Saudi Top Plastic Factory (STP) on the ‘RIYcycle’ project with a joint investment of over €3m.

The ‘RIYcycle’ project is aimed at recycling all the components of the packages collected in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries, like Kuwait and UAE. The new line is expected to process 8,000 tonnes of carton packages per year.

In Turkey, Tetra Pak has partnered with Kahramanmaraş Paper to open the first complete recycling solution for carton packages in the country. With a joint investment of about €4m, the plant can recycle all components of Tetra Pak cartons, with a recycling capacity of 18,000 tons of cartons per annum.

In Australia, Tetra Pak along with industry players will establish a new $5m facility by the end of this year, with an estimated recycling capacity of 4,000 tonnes of carton packages.

In Ukraine, Tetra Pak in collaboration with Zmievskaya Paper Factory launched a complete solution to recycle carton packages. With a joint investment of more than €1.5m, the plant can process up to 15,000 tonnes of carton packages per annum.

In July last year, Tetra Pak partnered with Stora Enso to increase beverage cartons’ recycling capacity in Poland.
