Latest innovation from the Stanelco group is a range of “cost effective and completely water soluble” self adhesive tape and label materials.

The substrate, developed by Adept Polymers, is coated with a special pressure sensitive adhesive said to be 100 per cent water soluble and 100 per cent biodegradable. The face material can be produced in a variety of grades from cold water soluble to hot water soluble and top coated to provide splash resistance, if required.

This development combines Aquasol’s technology with know-how from Adept Polymers. Aquasol is filing patents covering what are said to be “a number of exciting new applications”. These include: protecting highly polished surfaces against abrasion and corrosion; masking tape for the automotive industry; temporary binding; tamper evident tape; and wash-off labels for reusable food trays, crockery and glass.

In another development, Stanelco has introduced a biodegradable material to meet environmental requirements for air pillow packaging systems. Made from a new starch blend, this material can be used in air-pillow envelope packs and is said to be entirely biodegradable. It is compostable and water soluble, removing the current requirement to dispose of air-pillow envelope packs in landfills or incinerators.

Compared with traditional plastics bubble packaging materials such as HDPE, LDPE and PP, Stanelco says the new material is far less abrasive, has greater barrier properties and retains the air in the pockets much longer. The cost is also claimed to be highly competitive.
