Smart packaging technologies based on unique digital codes will lead online and off-line grocery in new directions during the next few years, according to the report.

The report has also revealed that online grocery shopping is increasing at a double-digit rate, while traditional stores are being reinvented and merging together into an omnichannel where consumers expected to purchase at any time from any place with the smartphone.

Tetra Pak Index 2018 spotlights four major trends influencing the growth of on-line grocery, including convenience, sustainability, personalisation and uniqueness, and technology and performance.

Convenience is a major driver for on-line consumer take-up, as time saving consumers look for new ways to complete the task quickly.

Consumers will also focus on sustainability, as the pressure on plastic and awareness of the circular economy will continue to grow and recycling will become crucial.

The report also suggested that customisation of products and personalisation in the consumer journey will be significant differentiators in the near future.

Supply chains will continue to be transformed by various technologies such as radio-frequency identification (RFID) and robotics, enabling to boost efficiency and transparency

Smart packaging technologies based on unique digital codes based on unique digital codes enable each and every product package to be provided a unique identifier.

The codes will be read by either data scanning devices or an ordinary smartphone,, helping to connect to large amount of information.

The e-Retailers will also use unique identifiers compatible with the robotic technology in their warehouse and distribution.

Tetra Pak Index 2018 is based on consumer research carried out in the US, UK, China, Saudi Arabia and Korea.
