Samsung Electronics has unveiled plans to eliminate plastics in mobile products packaging by 2025, as part of its sustainable efforts.

The move is part of the company’s sustainability platform, called Galaxy for the Planet, which is designed for the mobile communications business.

To achieve the target by 2025, Samsung has announced an initial set of targets to reduce its environmental footprint and minimise depletion from production to disposal of its Galaxy products.

Samsung intends to eliminate single-use plastics from product packaging by 2025.

It aims to reduce, remove and replace unnecessary resources and materials traditionally used in device packaging and integrate eco-conscious solutions.

The company is also planning to integrate recycled material across all new mobile products by 2025 to accelerate the circular economy.

To divert all waste from landfill by 2025, the company is also minimising waste generated at its mobile worksites.

The company said that it will also focus on reducing e-waste on a global scale by enhancing the product lifecycle and improving product design processes via initiatives such as Galaxy Upcycling, Certified Re-Newed, and Trade-In programmes.

Samsung Electronics mobile communications business head and president TM Roh said: “We believe that everyone has a role to play in providing innovative solutions that protect the planet for generations to come.

“Samsung understands our efforts need to match our scale, our influence and the magnitude of the entire Galaxy ecosystem around the world.

“Galaxy for the Planet is an important step in our journey toward creating a more sustainable world, and we will do so with the openness, transparency and collaboration that drives everything we do.”

In January 2019, Samsung Electronics announced that it intends to replace plastic packaging with sustainable materials to address society’s environmental issues such as resource depletion and plastic wastes.
