Logopak has supplied two “extremely high speed” real-time print and apply labelling systems to a leading contact lens manufacturer based in the south east of England.

Operating in a tandem solution, whereby when one unit runs out of labels the second automatically takes over, Logopak says the two 901TB90/400 units are being used for the “very accurate labelling” of triple packs of contact lenses at speeds of 70 packs/min.

The packs are transported in pucks which have an integrated transponder. At the start of each batch the transponder sends, via an ethernet connection to the Logopak iLeap62 controller, a data string containing the relevant label information. This in turn is sent back to the labellers which print and apply a 10-digit EAN barcode label.

A Microscan barcode reader is then used to check the code’s quality and the output is linked through the controller to an ejection mechanism in the event of poor codes. Twin product signalling was also incorporated in order to identify product presence in the puck. If no product is identified, no label is applied.
