Packaging and paper major Mondi said that it has collaborated with Veyzle, WEPA, and Soprema to enhance the circularity of release liner production waste.

According to Mondi, the circularity of material flows has been improved at two release liner production sites in Germany and the Netherlands. Through the collaborations, 95% of the production waste is repurposed as secondary raw material for various industries, said Mondi.

Through close collaboration with industry partners across the value chain, Mondi said that it has addressed the challenge of siliconised and coated paper waste generated at its release liner facilities in Jülich, Germany, and Heerlen in The Netherlands. This waste is now repulped and repurposed as secondary raw material for various applications.

Two years ago, Mondi Jülich and Mondi Heerlen initiated a partnership with Veyzle, a Dutch recycling specialist for paper and plastics, and the Dutch branch of the WEPA Group, which produces sustainable hygiene papers.

Veyzle collects production waste from Mondi’s plants, sorts, shreds, and bails the papers, then delivers them to WEPA.

Utilising advanced repulping technology, WEPA transforms laminated and siliconised papers into hygiene products like toilet paper and paper towels. Proximity between the partners minimises transportation, said Mondi.

Additionally, Mondi is collaborating with Soprema, a supplier of waterproofing systems and insulation materials.

Soprema uses Mondi’s release liner waste as a base material to manufacture cellulose wadding, an insulation solution enhancing building energy efficiency. This alliance is said to ensure resource preservation, while aligning with Soprema’s sustainability objectives of increasing recycled materials usage and waste reduction.

Mondi flexible packaging circular economy manager Carlos Martinez Ezquerra said: “At Mondi, we view waste as a loss in resources and have committed to eliminate waste from our production processes through our MAP2030 agenda.

“In this project, we aimed at using the production waste more effectively by valorising it as secondary raw materials in other applications.

“We are very proud of the 95% reduction we achieved at both locations and now look forward to working with CELAB, the leading industry initiative for the self-adhesive label value chain, and building relationships with other partners to further improve the circular flow of materials also in our other release liner locations across Europe.”

Earlier this month, Mondi confirmed that it is in the early stages of contemplating a possible all-stock bid for rival British packaging company DS Smith.
