Venture capital firm Kiilto Ventures has announced an investment in Sweden-based RECOMA, a startup that converts packaging waste into low-carbon, fully circular construction boards.

By repurposing waste, RECOMA creates circular, low-carbon construction boards that can easily replace conventional boards without requiring additional work or money.

According to Kiilto, sustainable construction boards will replace traditional materials, such as plywood, drywall, and oriented strand board (OSB), without additional cost or effort for builders.

Additionally, the use of these boards results in net-zero operational waste and water use.

The venture capital firm said the construction boards contain no virgin materials during its manufacturing process.

RECOMA CEO Max Rosenberg said: “We are proud to contribute to construction’s sustainability revolution and the transition towards zero waste and zero-emission building materials, helping companies and contractors make needed changes today without new tools, extra knowledge or premium prices.”

RECOMA’s patented method is said to sterilise and shred food cartons and beverage containers before being pressed into boards under high heat.

The Swedish startup is already supporting early adopters, such as Tetra Pak and Skanska, to satisfy environmental goals set by their customers and for corporate purposes.

RECOMA recycled almost 1,000 tons of garbage in 2023. By 2024, the company anticipates recycling 7,000 tonnes of garbage using this investment.

Kiilto Ventures head Matti Rönkkö said: “We see a gap in construction technology and traditional materials, and with new embodied carbon targets that are proliferating around the Nordics, we believe RECOMA is in a great position to decarbonise our building stock.”

Kiilto finances and develops early-stage businesses that restore the built environment and regenerate nature.

It is a venture capital arm of Kiilto, a Finland-based family-run business that focuses in the area of consumer goods, industrial adhesives and fireproofing, construction, professional hygiene, and fire safety.
