Finnish packaging solutions provider Huhtamaki is set to introduce next-generation tube laminates that can be used in cosmetics and food packaging applications.

The tube laminates have been developed by Huhtamaki, in collaboration with LyondellBasell, Plastuni Lisses (Groupe Somater) and Groupe Rocher.

They are made using more than 40% recycled content sourced from renewable-based plastics.

Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging global tube laminates head Jens Pilzecker said: “Our new tube laminates make a real contribution to further enhancing the circularity of flexible packaging, while reducing CO2 by replacing fossil by renewables.

“Achieving this breakthrough was possible thanks to the great co-operation with our partners LyondellBasell, Plastuni Lisses and Groupe Rocher.”

The laminates, with ISCC certified renewable content, are said to be used in product applications in the cosmetics, personal care, oral care and food sectors. They are expected to contribute to fully circular flexible packaging solutions for these sectors.

Working on the project, LyondellBasell severed as the resin supplier, Huhtamaki as the laminate manufacturer, Plastuni Lisses as the tube maker and Groupe Rocher as the brand owner.

To increase the circularity of laminated tubes, Huhtamaki planned to use recycled materials to create recyclable products.

The Finnish company also used resins from LyondellBasell’s CirculenRenew polymers.

The polymers are made using renewable feedstock from bio-based sources from waste and residues such as used cooking oil, implementing a mass balance method.

Last month, Huhtamaki launched a 100% plastic-free egg carton, known as Futuro, for cooked coloured eggs in Europe.
