New UK Government regulations for disposal of hazardous waste materials come into force on July 16. By that date, most converters, and other industrial and commercial premises, will be obliged to register with the Environment Agency if they produce such materials. Companies registering will receive a premises code, which must be available before professional waste management and recycling companies can remove hazardous waste from the premises. Without the code, no material can be removed from a producer’s site and to do so would be an offence.

Under the new regulations, a variety of new types of hazardous waste materials have been defined. Many organizations previously producing ‘Special Waste’ will now be included and the list of notifiable materials has even been extended to include discarded electronic and electrical parts. Only certain premises are exempt and even if firms produce very small quantities of hazardous waste, they will still need to register, keep detailed records and submit their quarterly returns.

Disposal specialist Saxon Recycling has published an information fact sheet and launched a new registration service to help printers conform with the new regulations. Customers can register with the Environment Agency through Saxon’s website.
