Speciality packaging solutions provider Comar has acquired Ireland-based Automatic Plastics (APL) for an undisclosed sum.

The transaction is supported by Morgan Stanley Capital Partners.

Based in Wicklow, Automatic Plastics is a contract manufacturer of injection moulded products with a main focus on the medical device and pharmaceutical sectors.

APL has expertise in the custom design, development, moulding and assembly of medical devices and rigid pharmaceutical packaging.

The company has an ISO 13485 certified production facility, which consists of 30 injection moulding machines ranging between 25 tonnes and 485 tonnes.

The machines are used in the designing and development, over-moulding, two-shot moulding, automation, desiccant handling and packaging, and custom printing.

APL managing director Al Lawless said: “From the beginning, we have trusted in Comar, their capabilities, and most importantly, their culture.

“They know how to partner with companies, mentor teams, and empower them to drive growth. We truly believe Comar will bring the focus and resources necessary to elevate APL to the next level of performance.”

The acquisition of APL will allow Comar to advance its medical device and pharmaceutical packaging manufacturing expertise and expand its presence in the European healthcare markets.

With more than 1,200 employees around the world, the combined company will operate 11 manufacturing facilities.

Comar CEO Mike Ruggieri said: “We are so excited to welcome the APL team to the Comar family. As part of our global vision, we believe it is critical to have a presence in Europe to better serve our medical and pharmaceutical customers many of whom have a global reach.

“APL has superb quality, best-in-class manufacturing, and a spectacular management team that can carry our strategic initiatives forward. We look forward to a successful partnership and continuing our growth journey together.”

In December last year, Comar acquired US-based Omega Packaging, which offers packaging products such as child-resistant (CR) and continuous thread (CT) closures and single, thick, and double-wall jars.
