Hong Kong-based Baguio Green Group has installed a new sorting facility enhanced by Near-Infrared (NIR) technology at one of its recycling plants in the country to support the company’s growth plans.

The new high-speed and fully-automated plastic-sorting facility is intended to support accelerated growth.

Baguio said that high-speed and fully-automated plastic-sorting facility can quickly separate all plastic kinds and colours possible.

In addition to boosting processing capacity, it also improves Baguio’s ability to precisely sort the collected plastic recyclables into many categories for quality conversion.

When fully operational, the plant could process more than 10,000 tonnes of plastic annually or over 400 million bottles.

As stated in the HKSAR Government’s Waste Blueprint for Hong Kong 2035, Hong Kong has set a target of zero landfill by 2035.

Baguio said it is leading the charge in recycling waste products, particularly plastics, and sharing the HKSAR Government’s ambition to develop a circular economy.

Baguio provides end-to-end services, including collection, pre-treatment, and sorting, and is the industry leader in recycling plastic waste in Hong Kong.

The outputs are given to New Life Plastics, a joint venture between Baguio and Swire Beverages Holdings Limited, to create food-grade recycled plastic materials.

Hong Kong’s most extensive plastic collection networks are said to be managed by Baguio.

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the HKSAR Government has hired the firm to handle the three-colour recycling bins at more than 2,800 collection locations around Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories.

The company was awarded a new, 33-month EPD Plastic Recycling Pilot Scheme contract in January 2022 to offer plastic collection services to three areas in Hong Kong (Eastern, Kwun Tong, and Central & Western).

Reverse vending machines (RVMs), Recycling Stations established by EPD, and certain organisations in Hong Kong will also receive plastic waste collecting services from Baguio.
