ABB has partnered with pulp and paper machinery maker Parason to automate and up-scale sustainable and compostable packaging solutions production in India.

The collaboration intends to aid Parason’s customers to minimise their dependence on single-use plastics and Styrofoam packaging.

ABB said that the moulded fibre tableware products are frequently used in industries across restaurants and cafes, food catering, transport, travel and industry canteens.

Under the partnership, ABB robots will be linked with Parason’s technology to facilitate the effective manufacturing of agro-waste products, a pure eco-friendly compostable packaging solution.

ABB installed 10 robots at Parason’s five-forming machine cell and deployed another 20 robots at the end of 2022.

ABB India Robotics & Discrete Automation Business country president Subrata Karmakar said: “The 3.5 million tons of plastic waste generated in India per annum creates various hazards, which is why India has initiated a nationwide ban on single-use plastic.

“ABB’s innovative robotic solutions, combined with Parason’s revolutionary turn-key manufacturing process using agro-waste, will be a key contributor to addressing climate change by adopting a 100% compostable alternative to plastics.”

ABB said that robotic applications will help improve overall health and safety and increase OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) performance by 30% when compared to manual pick-and-place operations.

The partnership aligns with India’s ambition to reduce its 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste per year.

By switching to ABB’s robotic solutions, Parason has also been able to reassign workers to meaningful, interesting and rewarding jobs.
