Food packaging and processing firm Tetra Pak has joined forces with beverage producers to launch tethered caps on carton packages.

The new solutions are intended to prevent litter and accelerate the transition to renewable materials.

Tetra Pak is launching five new tethered cap solutions in different product categories, which are being introduced by BBL in Ireland, Cido Grupa in the Baltics, LY Company Group and Lactalis Puleva in Spain, and Weihenstephan in Germany.

The packaging company’s latest move is expected to pave the way for European customers to stay ahead of schedule and meet the Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive, which is set to take effect in 2024.

According to Tetra Pak, the caps will stay attached to the package even after the usage to prevent littering.

They are made using plant-based solutions produced from polymers generated from ethically sourced sugarcane for a lower carbon footprint.

The presence of a high amount of renewable content will reduce the amount of plastic usage by between 7% and 15%, said the Tetra Pak.

Furthermore, most of Tetra Pak’s tethered cap portfolio contains less plastic. The firm obtained a plastic content decrease ranging from 7% to 15% depending on the various techniques used.

Tetra Pak marketing vice president Julia Luscher said: “We are delighted to be supplying a number of customers with tethered cap solutions, helping them to ‘walk the talk’ towards their sustainability ambitions.

“Understanding our customers’ needs and having collected consumer insights through multiple pieces of research across various markets, our new tethered caps have been designed to enhance convenience.

“For instance, they are easy to open and re-close for subsequent consumption, while featuring carefully sized diameters for smooth pouring and drinking.”

Tetra Pak has also made some investments to improve the manufacturing experience for consumers. Tetra Pak’s new high-quality, automated tethered cap production lines use Artificial Intelligence technology to boost productivity.
