At IPEX, X-Rite unveilled what it claims to be the world’s most accurate dot measurement and plate process control device. The PlateScope is said to account for every variable that can create faulty plates.

“PlateScope is the most accurate plate process control solution available, bar none,” boasted Chris LaFontaine, X-Rite’s worldwide product manager, graphic arts. “It allows you consistently to ensure that your plates are right the first time, every time.”

The new device will also measure chemistry-free and processless plates, and AM, FM and Hybrid screening technologies. It is said to be so accurate, it will even measure extreme highlights and shadows reliably.

With the integrated QC Plate software, printers can profile their platesetters, plates, presses and paper types to automatically generate the proper gain curves and speed quality checks.

According to X-Rite, the PlateScope is “far easier” to user than a Palm Pilot, with a simply navigated icon driven interface. The device has been ergonomically engineered to provide a comfortable fit even during prolonged usage. A patent pending video targeting system allows users to target the areas they want to measure, even when held at arm’s length or in darker lighting conditions. A built-in screen makes it easy to view specific areas on a plate.
