An 172mm width printhead that will enable the vast majority of food and drink packaging to be printed in a single pass has been introduced by Tonejet. It is claimed to be the widest integral printhead for use in an industrial digital printer.

According to Tonejet, the width of the printing area, combined with its high precision dot control, means that it is now possible “to create digitally the excellent image quality and colour usually associated with traditional print methods, on any surface, with a robust, thin and flexible ink layer”.

Company spokesman Guy Newcombe comments: “This technology is a real breakthrough for anyone wanting to print directly onto finished products. It removes the need for labels on curved or uneven surfaces and, in addition to cutting delivery times and eliminating waste, it will also open up new design possibilities for branding and marketing professionals who can now have free rein over how their products are decorated.”

Tonejet has been trialling the process with packaging manufacturers and claims to have “successfully delivered customized decoration into the marketing mix while matching or bettering the costs associated with conventional printing, even for very long run lengths”.
