Swedish pulp and paper manufacturer BillerudKorsnäs has launched its first climate-positive packaging.

Developed in a co-operation between BillerudKorsnäs and LafargeHolcim, the D-Sack packaging is said to provide a climate-positive impact for cement and other construction materials that dissolves.

The dissolvable sack is engineered to disintegrate in a conventional mixer, with the bio-based carbon in the paper captured in the construction itself.

BillerudKorsnäs Sack Solutions business development director Mark van der Merwe said: “It is an innovation that has been produced in our sack laboratory in close cooperation with LafargeHolcim designed to meet specific user needs and needs in the value chain.

“The sack laboratory has done an excellent job and set the standard for innovation in the packaging industry.”

Said to have several significant advantages over conventional cement sacks, the D-Sack can sack dissolve during the mixing process, which minimizes cement waste.

The ability to dissolve also allows the sack to eliminate packaging waste and saves time while ensuring a cleaner, safer and healthier workplace.

During the life cycle assessment conducted by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute,, the new sack captured CO2 over a one hundred-year perspective, making it climate positive.

The company said in a statement: “The reason is that the CO2 that was captured from the atmosphere during tree growth and then incorporated into the paper, is stored in the concrete structure.”

BillerudKorsnäs Communication & Sustainability senior vice president Henrik Essén said: “We believe in the potential of developing existing solutions further, in our business as well as in the packaging industry.

“Concepts like D-Sack, i.e. results of innovativeness and cooperation, strengthen our contribution to a sustainable future.”
