Biodegradable polymers will make further inroads into markets that are traditionally dominated by conventional thermoplastics says a report by Research and Markets Ltd.
According to the report the demand for biodegradable polymers is being driven by a number of factors, such as the competitive costs and the growing political pressure in developed countries to reduce packaging waste. “The cost of biodegradable polymers has come down considerably over the last three years while at the same time standard thermoplastic prices have increased,” the report highlights.

The four main classes of biodegradable polymers analyzed in the report are: polylactic acid (PLA), starch-based polymers, synthetic biodegradable polymers, such as aromatic aliphatic co-polyesters, and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA).
