The latest report from Basingstoke-based Juniper Research reveals Western European RFID revenues will reach a staggering US$1.9bn by 2009, up from $464M last year.

According to the consultancy’s RFID Futures in Western Europe report, supply chain deployment will account for the bulk of the spend, rising from $185.8M in 2004, to $575.6M in 2009. Over this period the UK and Germany are expected to account for some 40% of the market.

While RFID’s pharmaceutical sector deployment currently lags some way behind retail, mass transportation and supply chain use (at $185.8M in 2004) by 2009 Juniper predicts the sector will be among the biggest users, with an anticipated $408.5M in revenues putting it behind only the supply chain in the pecking order. Other markets where RFID is expected to take an increasing hold include retailing, where revenues are forecast to rise from $92.9M in 2004 to $315.6M in 2009.
