Domino Printing Sciences says changing pharmaceutical trends such as falling batch sizes and the resulting need for faster and easier changeovers were uppermost during the development of its new DSL1 Pharma scribing laser coder.

Unveiling the coder at interpack, pharmaceutical sector development director Lee Metters said it can provide “an ideal replacement’ for embossing systems used on pharmaceutical cartons and blisters, where he maintained not only could the small codes produced be difficult to read but changeovers could typically take 2-3 hours.

Domino says the DSL1 Pharma differentiates itself most significantly through software enhancements that allow manufacturers to easily comply with both GAMP 4 (Good Automated Manufacturing Practice) and 21CFR part II regulations governing electronic signatures. The coder can be supplied with comprehensive validation documentation, “making installation much simpler than with alternative products and upgrades from earlier technology, such as embossing, simple and cost-effective to achieve”.

The DSL1 can undertake simple or complex coding onto a wide range of materials and is designed to IP54 standard for demanding production environments.

Metters says: “The DSL1 Pharma raises the bar both in terms of its superior print quality in complex coding applications for wider fields and the degree of security it affords users. Usage is strictly controlled through user name and password protection, virtually eradicating problems associated with mis-coding or incorrect labelling in pharma plants.”
