Yorkshire based thermoformed packaging specialist, PFF Thermoformed Packaging, has invested over £4M in a new plant for the production of food-grade plastic packaging directly from recycled PET including bottles.
The investment will allow the company to take delivery of post-consumer waste PET and transform it into new thermoformed plastic food packaging within hours.
PFF managing director Andy Bairstow says: “By using PFF thermoformed packaging, retailers can offer their customers the assurance that the packaging is directly helping to reduce the amount of plastics being sent to landfill. That can only be a positive step and enhance a retailer’s green credentials.”
To create a food-grade plastic film from post-consumer waste, PFF sandwiches an up to 90 per cent recycled PET layer between outer layers of virgin material. PFF says that the material’s safety has been “independently and fully certified for direct food contact”.
The new plant is already fully operational at the company’s 95,000 sq. ft. factory in Keighley. In addition to processing post-consumer waste, the process also recycles all the waste plastic generated from the thermoforming lines.
Andy Bairstow adds, “We are now operating a factory that is 100 per cent waste-free. This makes our whole manufacturing chain a sustainable process.”
