Tyneside packaging printer Print Design & Graphics showed remarkable resilience following a recent fire.

Fortunately, its fire drill worked perfectly, and none of the 40 staff present were injured. By early next day, however, just “an empty shell” remained, with two of PDG’s three Komori six-colours destroyed, a third irrevocably damaged, and finishing and ancillary equipment wrecked.

As md Gordon Scorer explains, however, PDG was rapidly back in business: “Within 18 hours we had a new HQ in portakabins, and three days later were back to 70% production. Within 10 we had 100% and, in 21, were up to 125% to catch up on our orders.

Six weeks after the fire PDG had upgraded two nearby factories to BRC food specification and now has three new Komoris, four new Bobst cutter / creasers and four new gluers operational.
