Germany’s Weidenhammer Packaging Group has begun production of composite cans at a new plant in the UK. The new Weidenhammer UK operation, located in Bradford, is part of a joint venture with Chesapeake Branded Packaging (formerly Field Packaging), a subsidiary of the US based Chesapeake Corp.

At the new plant, more than 30 employees will operate four assembly lines producing composite cans for major food industry customers such as Cadbury (instant cacao drinks, candy), Quaker Oats (cereals, instant porridges) and United Biscuits (snacks), as well as smaller customers operating in tea, instant coffee and snackfoods. It will supply the UK and manufacture packaging for export to other specialized markets.

Weidenhammer anticipates that UK sales will reach “single-digit million pounds” this year, and that future growth will necessitate development of an enlarged production facility in Bradford by 2010.

CEO Ralf Weidenhammer comments: “Within a short time, we plan to offer the British market the same product portfolio that is currently available in mainland Europe. Until now, transport prices and a relatively weak Euro exchange rate have prevented the exporting of our products from continental Europe. Our new joint venture has always been our vision.”
