Hundreds of metallic ink variants are said to be possible using the MetalFX system, which overprints a combination of CMYK colour values on top of a modified high lustre silver base donor ink. All this can be achieved through a conventional five colour press in one single pass, according to MetalFX, and incorporated into photography, text, line art, logos and graphics, and can be used on any substrate.

Each MetalFX colour has also been translated into a range of palettes for mainstream software and can be replicated accurately time and again across a multitude of printing platforms anywhere in the world. Safeway, Marks & Spencer, Proctor and Gamble and Tesco have trialled MetalFX on their packaging; the technology has been approved by Kodak Polychrome Graphics, Creo, Gretag Macbeth, M-Real, Komori, Stehlin Hostag Ink UK and Wolstenholme International.
