The packaging industry’s biggest European event, Interpack 2011 will be staging a bioplastics group exhibition in a main hall for the first time.

Already fully booked nearly a year ahead of the show’s opening, the group exhibition organised by the European Bioplastics association will be in hall 9 with mainstream packaging materials, packs and package production. In 2005 and 2008, bioplastics was set apart from the more established sectors and featured in Interpack’s Innovation Park.

The relocation is said to reflect the progress that bioplastics has made in the past five years. Though with a market share of less than 1%, its average annual growth stands at 15-20%. The industry expects to grow from a current global production capacity of just under 600,000 tonnes, to more than 1.4 million tonnes by 2013.

“Despite the crisis over the last two years, companies keep addressing the growing demand for products that are climate friendly and resource efficient,” says Hasso von Pogrell, Managing Director of European Bioplastics.

Interpack runs from 12-18 May 2011.
