Belgian self-adhesive film manufacturer Grafityp has updated its in-house developed coating and laminating machine with control technology supplied by Siemens. The result, enthuses Managing Director Herman Bosman is “failures have reduced drastically and the operational reliability has improved. Winding tensions are now better under control, and the machine offers more possibilities, such as for the input of data and for the control of the production process.”

Prior to the retrofit, the plant at Grafityp was equipped with various, separate systems, such as separate control cards for the winder, separate controllers for the temperature control and a separate system of programmable logic controllers.

“There is now only a single central controller that controls all functions”, explains Stéphane D’hert, Application Consultant at Siemens. “In the Siemens Simotion D (drive-based) motion control, all functions are controlled from the same system and the same software.”

Because of its good experience with the retrofit, Grafityp is now considering equipping other production plants with Siemens hardware solutions in the near future.
