A new version of the Ovation sheet-fed flexo press from Göpfert features QuadTech’s inspection System to provide ‘total quality assurance’ for corrugated packaging products

A collaboration between German converting press manufacturer Göpfert and US press control systems supplier QuadTech, the Ovation is said to be the first corrugated converting system with in-line inspection and rejection facilities.

The press has two stacking towers – one for good sheets, and the other for ‘bad’ ejected sheets, which are rejected without being destroyed. The inspection system includes three cameras and is capable of inspecting the entire substrate width. Based on a closed-loop concept, its software enables ‘true benchmarking’ by making comparisons with the original ‘Golden Template’ image.

The inspection system is linked to QuadTech’s Data Central reporting function, which gives operators and company staff a suite of statistics and reports relating to print defects. All analysis is reported and updated in real-time, as soon as production begins, so that finished product is defect-free.

Originally launched in 2003, the Ovation comes in four widths: 1,600, 2,000, 2,400 and 2,800mm. It prints up to 10,000 sheets/hour and can be supplied with any number of colour stations.

The first customer to install the upgraded model is a major German converter of corrugated board packaging, who has ordered a 7-colour machine.
