UK's five North East councils including Durham, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and Northumberland have joined hands with Waste Aware North East, a public private partnership recycling initiative in the UK to promote the recycling of aerosols and glass jars in the region.

Under the scheme, Durham, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland will concenterate on the recycling of aerosols and glass jars, whereas the scheme will focus on aerosols and hard plastic bottles in Northumberland.

Residents of the five states can register online or over the phone for a pack to be sent by post including personalized stickers which are unique to their address.

According to the scheme coordinators, the stickers must be applied to their empty glass jars or aerosols before being placed into their kerbside recycling bins provided by the council ready for the usual collection.

The scheme, launched on 1 December 2011 will run through July 2012.
