Pennsylvania-based customized thermoformed plastic packaging company Tray-Pak has adopted UPES additive resin from Nova Chemicals to increase the durability of thermoforming for trays.

UPES is a polyethylene-polystyrene material made by Nova’s patented Qinnex-brand technology. The material broadens the processing window of polymer systems and is easier to process than copolymer materials.

Tray-Pak executive vice president of sales and marketing Kevin Gramley said that the adoption of UPES additive resin has reduced thickness and thus the company can offer cost reductions to its customers.

Trays made using UPES in combination with standard HDPE performed 33% faster, with enhanced part definition, shorter start-ups and reduced scrap rates. UPES also allowed for 20% material source reduction and more efficient machine usage.
