Tekpak has sold its first servo-controlled flow wrapper to Wyeth, which is designed to ensure more hygienic packaging of powdered baby milk.

Tekpak, an Ireland-based packaging machinery manufacturer, has sold its first fully servo-controlled flow wrapper to Wyeth, a Pfizer-owned pharmaceutical company, to pack powdered baby milk.

The newly installed machine uses the four-axis robotic feeding unit, recently developed by Tekpak. The machine consists of a flow wrapper and the handling robot, which are designed and manufactured at the Wexford factory of Tekpak.

This method of lifting nutrition scoops directly from an injection mould and feeding them into a flow wrapper, without the need for human intervention has been introduced into the market for the first time. The packaging system robotically transfers the scoops from the injection moulding machine to the flow wrapper to ensure maximum hygiene.

Integrated logic and motion controller controls the system by monitoring the operation of the eight servo motors (four in the robot feeding system and four in the flow wrapper).

John Kehoe, managing director of Tekpak, said: “The robotic feeding unit has been developed as a standard module which can be easily and quickly adapted for use in feeding a wide variety of products to either our own flow wrappers or to customers’ existing machines.”

This packaging machine is compatible with packaging applications for products like biscuits, cakes, confectionery etc.
