Portuguese winemaker Caves Santa Marta has installed bag-in-box filling line of Smurfit Kappa.

The twin-head BIB900 went into operation at the end of July and replaces one line. This complements Caves’ two other bag-in-box lines from Smurfit Kappa and enables the firm grow its export business.

The new line consists of an octagonal box erector that feeds the boxes into the BIB900, a pressurised tank and weight controls.

Bags measuring between 3l and 20l can be filled using the twin-head machine and the line is housed in a stainless steel frame to meet food hygiene legislation.

Smurfit said the new short-flow valve that separates the vacuum circuit and the nitrogen circuit for the perfect tightness to use the Vitop closure increases the shelflife of the wines, as reported by PackagingNews.
