Sweden-based paper pulp producer Rottneros approved an additional investment of SEK117m ($13.9m) to boost the capacity of its Rottneros Mill located in Sunne, Värmland County.

The investments will be used in increasing the capacity of the CTMP line by nearly 18,000 tonnes per year of the mechanical pulp.

According to Rottneros, the expanded CTMP line will commence operations in the fall of 2018.

The new investment follows the company’s strategic development plan named as ‘Agenda 500’, through which a first investment was made last year to boost capacity.

As part of the Agenda 500 framework, Rottneros Mill had commissioned a bio mass boiler in the third quarter of this year. The new bio mass boiler has come in the place of an oil-based boiler, which the company says has made the mill almost fossil-free.

The purification plant at the mill will be expanded as part of an existing investment and is slated to begin operations next year.

Rottneros president and CEO Lennart Eberleh said: “The Rottneros Mill has a strong position as a supplier of high yield pulp.

“With increased capacity, we ensure that Rottneros can be a reliable supplier of CTMP and an attractive partner for our customers.”

Rottneros will also be using part of the investment from ‘Agenda 500’ at the Vallvik Mill located in Hälsingland which produces long-fibre chemical sulphate pulp.

At the Vallvik Mill, the company will invest in a weak gas collection system to ensure the long-term sustainability of the mill.

Rottneros will also invest in the Vallvik Mill to raise its production to 255,000 tonnes of chemical pulp per year.
