The demand in US for the produce packaging is anticipated to reach $48bn by 2014. A rebound in fresh produce production and growth in consumer spending as a result diminishing effect of the December 2007 recession in US is going to drive the demand.

The demand will also depend on the strategies of the retailers employed for protecting and marketing their produce.

Plastic containers are predicted to be fastest growing types, while corrugated boxes will be the most demanded type of packaging even after 2014.

Due to the increase in the moderate box price in 2004-2009, and tough competition from the reusable plastic containers, demand for the box packaging is projected to increase below the industry average.

However, boxes like, modular boxes, white-top linerboard boxes and moistureresistant recyclable boxes will still have an increased demand.

The demand for the bags and liner is also anticipated to be less than the average due to the same reasons that affect the demand for the boxes. However, with the growth in the variety of fresh-cut offerings, greater use of resealable and easy opening bags and requirements for value-added modified atmosphere packaging films offering extended shelf life for ready-to-eat produce, high demand for plastic bags and liners is foreseen.

The demand for RPCs and temperature monitoring and traceability systems and other such small segments too is expected to grow.
