Swedish specialty chemicals producer Perstorp has announced that the company’s Capa for bioplastics (Capa 6500D) is now food contact approved in Europe.

According to the company, Capa 6500D supports the development of many bioplastic products including shopping bags, drinking bottles and food packaging.

The tried and tested technology, Capa caprolactones imparts advantageous performance properties supporting renewable as well as disposable bioplastic product development.

Capa caprolactones, which is said to serve as a better choice for bioplastic formulations, is biodegradable and also stable in processing and end use properties means.

The thermoplastic can be customized to satisfy the competing demands of long-life, reusable and disposable bioplastics and features various advantages making it suitable for polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and starch blends in durable applications, to improve mechanical properties.

Capa caprolactones is also said to be suitable for applications including disposable or one-time use packaging applications where there is a need for fast biodegradation.

Bioplastics project manager Linda Zellner said the increasing demand for packaging made from renewable and biodegradable material goes hand in hand with the products the company offers and the solutions that it can offer in this segment.

"Adding and blending in Capa™ with PLA, starches and PHAs overcomes many of the processing problems, and dramatically improves the mechanical properties too," Zellner added.

Capa, which provides fast biodegradation, also acts as a stable mechanical property enhancer in formulations as well as applications.
