Offers hot and cold paper cups on demand by University students

US-based International Paper has introduced a commercially compostable cold cup in an alliance with Coca-Cola. Through this launch the company has enhanced its beverage container portfolio, reported Beverage Daily.

The company, in response to the requirement of the university students for cold cups, has included this new container to its ecotainer portfolio. During 2006, the company launched the original ecotainer, which was designed only for hot cups line.

The company informed that “to have an integrated offer of hot and cold paper cups that are made from 100% renewable resources.”

The company continued that both the products are being certified by the Biodegradabilty Products Institute (BPI) meeting the ASTM D6400 standard for compostability, which are commercially compostable and has lesser environmental footprint. The cold cup, which is industrially composted, has a specific coating on it.

A spokesman, said: “Rather than use a petroleum-based liner, ecotainer products are coated with a plant-based moisture barrier made from Ingeo by NatureWorks.” Because of this unique lining, the ecotainer cold cup can be commercially composted with food waste, which can help reduce the amount of material going to landfills.”

Beth McKeithen, marketing manager for International Paper, said: “We partnered with both Coke and the University of Washington (UW) to finalise the development and launching of the ecotainer cold cup. Coke was being asked by colleges and universities they supply drinks to for innovative products specifically focused towards their environmental initiatives. UW specifically wanted a compostable cup and we are working with Coke as they roll this out to other colleges and universities across the US.”
