European Union has brought in a brand label for organic food as a part and parcel of the new labelling rules that are implemented by this July.

European Union has brought in a brand label as part of the new labelling rules that are implemented from July 1, 2010.

The new logo will be obligatory on pre- packaged organic food commodities that are manufactured in any of the EU member states. However, such an obligation will be optional for the non-packed and imported organic products.

Dacian Ciolos, EU commissioner for agriculture and rural development, opined: “Our hope is that the new EU logo can develop into a widely recognised symbol of organic food production across the EU, providing consumers with confidence that the goods are produced entirely in-line with the strict EU organic farming regulations”.

Besides the logo, the new labelling rules also include the mandatory signs of the place where the ingredients were from and the code number of the body in charge of the controls.

The new regulation also includes organic aquaculture production of fish, shellfish and seaweed. The union has specifically asserted that biodiversity must be respected and organic feeds supplemented with fish feeds from sustain able fisheries should be utilised.
