Alcan has announced a proposal for the realignment of its packaging portfolio in Europe. It will affect the company’s food, tobacco and beauty packaging sectors, with a potential loss of 350 jobs.
“This proposed realignment is necessary to create favourable conditions for future growth and expansion,” says Christel Bories, president and ceo, Alcan Packaging. “Maintaining competitiveness is the best insurance for long term sustainable employment.”
The proposed restructuring would include closure of the Mühltal and Roth food packaging plants in Germany, affecting 271 employees, and of the tobacco packaging operation in Amsterdam, with another 47 people. The Beauty Packaging business would be re-organized in several European countries, which could lead to “a reduction of approximately 100 jobs”.
Production from these plants would be transferred to other Alcan Packaging sites. The company says a variety of support programmes would be developed to assist affected employees.
Alcan is also considering the potential divestment of its Beauty packaging plant in Provins, France, (168 employees), and the food packaging plant in Zaragoza, Spain, (152 people), as part of its strategy to concentrate its investments on its core businesses.
“We are very conscious of our responsibilities and we intend to manage the social and human consequences of these critically important actions in the most sensitive way,” says Christel Bories.
