Visy, a paper, packaging and recycling firm, has decided to invest A$700m ($500m) for the expansion of its recycling and remanufacturing operations in Queensland, Australia.

The firm’s announcement is part of Visy executive chairman Anthony Pratt’s 2021 pledge to invest A$2bn in Australian recycling and clean energy infrastructure over the ensuing decade.

As part of the plan, the company will invest A$500m to establish a new glass food and beverage container recycling and manufacturing facility in Yatala, A$150m for a new corrugated box factory in Hemmant, and A$48m for modifications of its material recovery facility (MRF) on Gibson Island.

As part of the project, Visy will shift its current glass re-manufacturing operations from South Brisbane to Yatala in 2025.

The projects will create around 900 construction jobs and 300 green collar remanufacturing jobs.

Visy said that the new factory at Yatala will aid to increase the recycled content in Visy’s glass packaging to 70%, reduce landfill, and reduce the use of natural resources via advanced technologies.

It will also support Queensland’s beverage manufacturers by producing one billion glass containers a year, Visy said.

The corrugated box factory at Hemmant will support Queensland’s agricultural sector, supporting farmers across Queensland.

The upgrade of its facility at Gibson Island will divert 30,000kt of material from landfill. Currently, the company recycles more than 250,000 tonnes of material from kerbside collections per annum.

Pratt said: “This is the largest investment Visy has ever made in Queensland and is part of my pledge to invest A$2 billion in Australia over the decade.

“I commend Premier Palaszczuk and her Government for its leadership in support of Australian manufacturing.

“This A$700 million investment confirms the Government’s economic plan to grow the State’s economy and create advanced manufacturing jobs is working.

“Under Premier Palaszczuk’s leadership, Queensland has become a global powerhouse for manufacturing.”
