French waste management company Veolia has partnered with personal care company L’Oréal to supply the latter with recycled plastic for cosmetic packaging.

Also, both firms aim to build a circular economy for plastics by minimising the carbon footprint of cosmetic packaging.

The recycled plastic, which will be supplied, is claimed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions between 50% and 70%, compared to a standard bottle.

The plastic collected from consumer packaging waste such as bottles and flasks will be initially treated and then recycled.

Veolia said that specific packaging will be selected to ensure the purity of the material.

The new recycled plastic, which is used in the composition of cosmetic packaging, is said to meet the requirements and is in line with the certifications of the food sector.

Leveraging advanced technology that removes organic compounds, Veolia manufactures quality granules that are in line with the international certifications.

L’Oréal packaging and development director Jacques Playe said: “We are pleased to enter into this partnership with Veolia for the supplying of very high-quality recycled plastic dedicated to cosmetic packaging, because we share the same ambitions and values in terms of sustainable development.

“This will contribute to our “L’Oréal for the Future” sustainable development programme, enabling us to achieve our 2030 ambitions and significantly improve the environmental footprint of our packaging.”

Veolia stated that it had recycled over 350,000 metric tonnes of plastic across the world in 2019 and is intending to recycle 610,000 metric tonnes per annum by 2023.

The waste management firm has expertise in the processing of various types of resins, including expanded polyethylene and expanded polyethylene.

Veolia business development and strategic accounts in-charge vice president Johann Bonnet said: “As a global champion of ecological transformation, Veolia is committed to reducing plastic waste and to promoting industrial ecology.

“We are delighted to support L’Oréal in achieving its sustainable development objectives, by providing our know-how in resource recovery and recycling.”
