Valmet has been awarded a contract to supply an off-line multinip calender for UPM Nordland Papier at its Dörpen Mill in Germany.

Under the contract, Valmet will deliver new off-line calender including Valmet’s machine control system to give the final high quality for the release and glassine paper grades after the grade conversion rebuild.
Employing 1300 people, the UPM Specialty Papers’ paper mill in Dörpen is equipped to produce woodfree coated and uncoated fine papers (WFC, WFU) for printing and copying, digi papers, speciality papers.
Valmet said that the new machine, following grade conversion rebuild, is scheduled to be commissioned in the end of 2019.
The scope of the Valmet’s delivery for the new -capacity off-line calender include a calender unwind, an OptiCalender Multinip calender, OptiDry air dryers and a wind-up station.
Additionally, the off-line calender will be integrated with Valmet DNA machine control system.
Valmet said: “The multinip calender has 14 nips providing superior quality for the end product. Calendering is effective already in the first nips.
“Each nip is loaded with the same extreme nip load at high temperatures giving the end product low surface roughness, low oil absorption and high transparency.”
With a design speed of1,300 m/min, the approximately 4,500mm wide off-machine calender is capable of producing release paper grades with a basis weight range of 48-120 g/m2.
UPM Specialty Papers is engaged in producing labelling and packaging materials for paper converters, distributors, retailers and printers.
Employing approximately 1,700 people, the firm has operations in Finland, China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Australia.
