Finnish technology company Valmet has announced that it will supply a new containerboard machine to DS Smith Paper Italia for their Porcari (Lucca) site in Italy.

The new machine, BM 3, which is scheduled for start-up in mid-2025, is said to have extensive packages of automation, services and industrial internet applications.

The supply deal consists of a recycled liner board making line from broke collection to a reel and winder along with a board machine process ventilation system.

Additionally, the wide automation package includes a Valmet DNA automation system for process and machine controls, runnability and condition monitoring and a Valmet IQ quality management system.

According to Valmet, DS Smith will receive a comprehensive Valmet Industrial Internet package that consists of Valmet Performance Center services, advanced monitoring and predictive applications as well as training simulators.

The delivery also includes Valmet Paper Machine Clothing, spare parts and consumables packages.

Valmet paper business line board and paper mills sales director Kari Räisänen said: “Driven by increased demand in sustainable packaging solutions, the containerboard market is growing fast.

“Valmet as a market leader in innovative board-making technologies has developed a number of sustainable solutions to meet the market needs.

“Our unique offering together with the production potential of the containerboard machine were the decisive factors for DS Smith.”

The BM 3 has an 8,600mm wide wire that will help to make recycled liner grades with a basis weight range of 70–135 g/m2.

It will have a production speed of 1,500m/min and a mechanical design speed of 1,700m/min, the technology company claimed. It can produce 450,000 tonnes of liner grades.

The latest supply order was added to Valmet’s orders received for the fourth quarter of 2022. The value of the order was not revealed.

In September last year, the Finnish firm signed a deal with Cheng Loong Binh Duong Paper Company to supply key process technology for the latter’s containerboard machine 23 at Cheng’s Ben Cat mill in Binh Duong Province in Vietnam.
