UK-based sustainable packaging start-up Skipping Rocks Lab has developed new edible packaging for water called Ooho.

The new spherical flexible packaging will enable to reduce environmental impact by replacing plastic bottles.

Skipping Rocks’s new packaging solution can also be used for other liquids such as soft drinks, spirits and cosmetics.

The Ooho has been created by using plants and seaweed. It is biodegradable in four to six weeks similar to a piece of fruit.

With a shelf life of few days, the new edible packaging can be flavored and colored.

Claimed to be cheaper than plastic, the edible packaging has been specifically designed for water-on-the-go market.

Skipping Rocks was established to create packaging solutions by using natural materials extracted from plants and seaweed, helping to reduce environmental impact.

The start-up intends to create waste-free alternatives to plastic bottles, cups, plates and others.

Established to develop seaweed-based packaging solution, Skipping Rocks aim is to stop one billion plastic bottles reaching the ocean per annum and eliminate 300 million kg of CO2 from being emitted.

Part of the Climate KIC start-up acceleration program, Skipping Rocks Lab is established by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) and its scientific team is based in Imperial College.
