The future of packaging?

A major packaging conference will be held in London on November 24. Packaging: 2020 Vision will present views from a range of leading strategic thinkers on how they see tomorrow’s packaging supply chain evolving and what challenges that may present.

Organizers INCPEN (the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment) and The Packaging Federation say the conference “will focus not just on the physical innovations that will undoubtedly arise over the next 15 years, but also on all the other important factors that will have an impact on packaging”. These include consumer preferences, demographic shifts, supply chain developments and environmental regulation.

John Elkington, chairman of SustainAbility, will present the keynote address on sustainable consumption and production. The WWF will present the NGO view on packaging; consultancy Five Winds International will develop the environmental theme in relation to materials; and the National Non Food Crop Centre will present ideas for materials in the future. The Centre for Future Studies, the Trading Standards Institute and WRAP will explore future consumer trends. Rexam and the IGD will provide insights from key sectors in the packaging chain.

Bill Duncan, managing director of ASSURRE, will put packaging in the context of broader European resources policy, and Pira and Perchards will present packaging studies currently underway for the EC that will inform legislative policy on packaging beyond 2008.
