The new TCP facility will be used for the packaging of both leaf and dust tea

Indian-based consumer products company Tata Consumer Products (TCP) has opened a new tea-packaging facility in the Indian state of Odisha.

Situated in Gopalpur Industrial Park of Tata Steel Special Economic Zone near Berhampur, the new tea-packaging facility will be operated by TCP associated company Amalgamated Plantations Private Limited (APPL).

APPL already operates three tea packing factories, including two in Assam and one in West Bengal.

Developed with an investment of Rs1bn ($13.43m), the new TCP facility will be used for the packaging of both leaf and dust tea.

The new plant, which is spread over 16 acres, consists of integrated production design and warehousing facilities with vertical storage space and specifications to meet cyclone impacts.

The facility is expected to become the company’s largest tea packing plant with an production capacity of up to 60 million kilogrammes per annum by 2024-25

It is said to create direct and indirect employment for 250 people in the first year, as well as up to 700 people by 2024-25.

The new tea-packaging facility features advanced packing machinery with IoT capabilities for enhanced operational efficiency. It is also installed with a solar power unit with a capacity of 350kW.

TCP managing director and CEO Sunil D’Souza said: “The plant is an integral part of Tata Consumer Products’ plans to scale supply chain capabilities to meet growing consumer demand.

“It is a state-of-the-art unit, the largest tea packing plant for Tata Consumer and will be a key hub in our supply chain network. It has also been built with a focus on green manufacturing, in line with our sustainability agenda.”

Claimed to be the second largest branded tea company in the world, TCP offers various products such as tea, coffee, water, salt, pulses, spices, ready-to-cook offerings, breakfast cereals, snacks and mini meals.

The company also markets beverage brands such as Tata Tea, Tetley, Eight O’Clock Coffee, Tata Coffee Grand, Himalayan Natural Mineral Water, Tata Water Plus and Tata Gluco Plus.
