Taaleri’s Taaleri Bioindustry I fund has completed an investment in sustainable packaging producer Colombier to expand its Ecological Packaging plant in Pyhtää, Finland.

Part of Colombier Group, Colombier Finland produces paper and cardboard products as an alternative to plastic packaging.

The firm also has affiliates in the Netherlands, the UK, and Spain in addition to Finland.

This is the first investment made by Taaleri Bioindustry I Fund. Taaleri said that the fund makes investments in businesses and industrial-scale production facilities that can accelerate the scaling of production in the bioindustry.

The facilities intend to produce bio- and recycled fibres, organic fertilisers, functional biomaterials, and recycled materials to replace virgin products.

Taaleri Bioindustry director Tero Saarno said: “We are very happy to start working with Colombier. The market for sustainable packaging is growing rapidly, as plastic-based packaging is increasingly being replaced by paper- and cardboard-based products.

“Colombier has excellent products for this market and an expanding selection.”

Taaleri Bioindustry I Fund is a dark green fund that only invests in sustainable initiatives that are designed to reduce climate change. It complies with Article 9 of the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation.

The charity has secured almost €100m and is still collecting donations. The fund’s anchor investor is the state-owned special assignment firm, Finnish Climate Fund.

Colombier Group CEO Juha Viitala said: “Our innovative Ecological Packaging division has generated a large degree of interest from capital markets. We found a great partner in Taaleri to realise the tremendous growth potential of our award-winning Colombier EcoBarrier products.

“We were particularly impressed by Taaleri’s in-house expertise in manufacturing and green tech. Our partnership will help bring more of our environmentally sound and sustainable products to global food and packaging users.”
